The new E-Class Saloon is also available with a 3.5 litre V6 engine, which also complies with the EU5 exhaust gas emissions standard: the E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY. The features of this engine include direct injection and 4-valve technology. The energy efficiency of the auxiliary units has also been improved. The new radiator blind optimises the vehicle’s aerodynamics, and the fuel pump, ECO power steering pump and air-conditioning compressor now operate in line with requirements.
The rated torque is 365 Nm at 3000-5100 rpm, the engine output is 215 kW (292 hp). This engine combines smooth operation and eco-efficiency with the highest level of agility and handling dynamism. The 6-cylinder engine accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
The E 350 4MATIC is available in an all-wheel drive variant. This model is equipped with port injection and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, delivers 200 kW (272 hp) and achieves a maximum torque of 350 Nm at 2400 - 5000 rpm.

Permanent all-wheel-drive is available as an optional extra; it makes it possible to drive off and accelerate powerfully even on poor road surfaces or on wet, icy or snowy road surfaces. Since 4MATIC is constantly active, the system does not require any reaction time in order to intervene spontaneously. The all-wheel drive system is supported by the ESP® Electronic Stability Program as well as by the 4ETS Electronic Traction System, which applies the brakes in a targeted manner on wheels that are about to spin, while directing the drive torque automatically to the wheels with good traction.
Apart from this, 4MATIC makes conventional differentials superfluous: the automatic braking impulses improve pulling-away behaviour on low-grip surfaces and improve stability during critical driving manoeuvres.
4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive is available in conjunction with 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission and V6 and V8 engines (E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, E 350 and E 500).
Another contribution to relaxed driving comes from the newly-developed, standard-fit DIRECT CONTROL suspension with selective damping system. The shock absorbers automatically adapt to the driving situation. The improved damping effect and stabilisation of the vehicle are particularly valuable on poor road surfaces. The optional DIRECT CONTROL suspension permits the vehicle body to be lowered by 15 millimetres (standard in conjunction with the AVANTGARDE equipment line and the AMG sports package).
The AIRMATIC air suspension – standard in the E 500 and optional for the 6-cylinder models – automatically influences the effect of the shock absorbers on each wheel and adapts them to the current road, load and driving characteristics. The driver can manually switch between a comfortable and a sporty setting. When necessary the system independently switches to a more rigid option – for example when the driver has to make an evasive manoeuvre. The vehicle height can be regulated with a push of a button: on poor sections of the road the vehicle height can be raised by 25 millimetres and at higher speeds it is automatically lowered by 15 millimetres – for more driving stability and less air resistance. Even when the vehicle is loaded the ground clearance remains constant thanks to the level control system.
The optional Direct-Steer system offers a more direct steering ratio, reducing the need for great steering movements at large steering angles, for instance when parking or in tight curves. Direct-Steer is standard in the models with V6 and V8 engines.
Comfort takes centre stage in the E-Class. So that you can stay relaxed even on long journeys or during difficult driving manoeuvres, there are assistance systems to support you. You will find information on further assistance systems in the Safety area.
New seats were designed for the E-Class to meet the highest requirements for seating comfort, ergonomics and safety.
The standard seats with their well-contoured upholstery provide optimum support even during sportier drives and allow for relaxed driving on long journeys as well. Active multicontour seats are available as an option for the driver and front passenger. Their separately controlled air chambers can be optimally set to suit an individual’s stature and the seat side bolsters automatically and dynamically adapt to the driving situation. Seat cushion length, seat side bolsters and lumbar support can be adjusted pneumatically. Additional comfort is provided by a dynamic massage function in seven zones. These are just some reasons why the active multicontour seats were awarded the quality seal by the Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V., a German association promoting products for healthy backs.
The front seats are available with a partially-electric seat adjustment as standard, and optionally with full electrical adjustment. The switches for this are clearly arranged in the doors. If the optional Memory package is ordered, a total of three position settings can be stored for the driver’s seat, the steering column and the exterior mirrors.
Generosity reaches new heights in the rear of the new E-Class – in particular with the optional rear comfort package. Special highlights include luxury head restraints and a generous stowage box in the centre. The seats then also feature leather upholstery, seat heating and sunblinds on the rear doors, a rear window blind and an armrest with two integrated drink holders.
The Audio 20 CD provides good entertainment as standard and can be optionally equipped with an integrated CD changer for 6 discs.
Audio 50 APS combines precise 2-D map navigation, incl. TMC automatic traffic alerts, with entertainment systems such as DVD drive and radio.
The optionally available COMAND APS multimedia system is the vehicle’s full entertainment and navigation centre.
Featuring 14 loudspeakers, including a woofer, this optionally available Dolby Digital 5.1 system has an output of 600 watts – for first-class acoustics.
Traditionally Mercedes-Benz stands for a high degree of safety in road traffic. With around a dozen new or enhanced assistance systems our engineers have now written a new chapter in the long history of passenger car safety. The spotlight is now focused even more brightly on avoiding traffic accidents and reducing the severity of accidents.
The sensors of the new optional safety technology provide the new E-Class "senses" as an option, including radar and camera technology which looks far ahead and monitors the vehicle’s surroundings. If these radar sensors detect e.g. an imminent rear-end collision, they first warn the driver and can then assist by actuating the brakes.
A further milestone on the way to reaching the vision of accident-free driving is the Adaptive High-Beam Assist function. The system is available as an option and always provides the best possible illumination of the road surface in every situation. With oncoming traffic or vehicles travelling in front, High-Beam Assist automatically adjusts the headlamps to the dipped-beam setting. In the dipped-beam setting the headlamp range is adjusted so as not to dazzle other road users – the headlamp range can be expanded to up to 300 metres. Manually switching between low beam and high beam is no longer necessary.
For safe driving, the Mercedes-Benz safety concept supports you using many different measures: the control and display system is especially tailored to the driver. Then there are systems which are designed to alert and assist the driver in critical situations.
PRE-SAFE® comprises systems which act in an anticipatory manner and take precautionary protection measures. PRE-SAFE® includes, apart from reversible belt tensioners, the automatic closing of the side windows and of the optional sliding sunroof. The air cushions in the newly developed active multicontour seats can also fill up with air within seconds to provide better hold to the driver and front passenger in the event of an imminent collision. Furthermore, if the front passenger seat is equipped with a memory package, PRE-SAFE® can move it into the safest possible position in a hazardous situation.
PRE-SAFE® can be activated, e.g. by events such as emergency braking, heavy oversteer or understeer or rapid steering wheel movements at high vehicle speeds. In conjunction with the (optional) DISTRONIC PLUS short-range radar sensor system, PRE-SAFE® can also be activated by the measurements of the radar system when it detects the risk of a collision.
In the E-Class, a host of safety systems work in unison to help prevent accidents. However, should the worst come to the worst, occupant safety measures come into play, providing protection for both the occupants and other road users. Occupant protection comes in the form of a high-strength safety passenger cell, standard-fit adaptive front airbags which are deployed in two stages in accordance with the severity of the impact. Furthermore, sidebags in the front seat backrests and windowbags are also on board. The driver’s kneebag can help reduce the driver’s risk of injury in an accident even further.
Then there are the NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger: in the event of a rear-end collision above a certain severity, pre-loaded springs push the head restraints by around 56 millimetres forwards and 23 millimetres upwards at lightning speed to support the heads of the front occupants at an earlier stage. This can reduce the risk of whiplash injuries considerably.
The standard active bonnet is a safety feature for the protection for other road users and helps reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists. In the event of a collision the rear section of the active bonnet rises up by five centimetres using spring force. This can produce additional deformation space to absorb the impact and can prevent serious injury.
Depending on the type and severity of an accident, various measures can be taken to prevent further damage being caused in the aftermath of an accident and assist with the task of rescuing the occupants: the engine can be turned off automatically and the fuel supply cut off. In order to prevent a follow-on accident, and to facilitate finding the accident vehicle, the hazard warning lights and emergency interior lights can be automatically activated, and the side windows can also be partially lowered if necessary.
Various precautions have been taken to assist the work of the rescue team too. For example, the door locking mechanism can be released automatically after an accident. Crash joints between the wings and the doors can speed up rescue work by allowing the latter to be opened more easily after a frontal collision. To complete its comprehensive safety philosophy, Mercedes-Benz has also published multilingual rescue guidelines (accessible worldwide on the internet) as a source of information for rescue services.
When it comes to special protection and exceptional safety, Mercedes-Benz Guard has been setting the standard for eight decades. We invented and perfected the unique principle of integrated protection ex factory: each Mercedes-Benz Guard is designed and assembled from scratch.
The new E-Guard is also distinguished by this know-how. This special protection E-Class not only passed all the safety and quality tests that a Mercedes-Benz is subjected to, it also meets the stringent requirements of protection class VR 4.
In addition the standard-fit MOE run-flat tyres and the all-round high-strength and shatter-resistant glass which ensures the highest visual quality set the E-Guard apart. As do the electronic control system which is designed to hold additional weight, the brakes and the specially reinforced suspension components.
